What is the difference between bespoke, made-to-measure and off-the-peg?
Great question, and one we’re often asked.
Off-the-peg (or ready-to-wear) garments are made in standard sizes and styles and are mass-produced. They’re quick and convenient, but rarely offer a great fit without further alterations and the same styles tend to be found everywhere
Bespoke is the most traditional and involved process. A unique pattern is drafted for each client from scratch, with multiple fittings along the way. It’s a true craft, but it comes with a high price point and a long lead time.
Made-to-measure, which is what we specialise in, offers the perfect balance. We start with a base pattern, but then tailor it specifically to you, adjusting over twenty measurements to ensure an excellent fit. You also choose your cloth, styling details and personal touches, so the result is a one-off garment that reflects your taste, fits beautifully, and is made with the same quality fabrics used by top-tier bespoke tailors. It’s a more accessible, modern approach that delivers much of the quality and fit of bespoke, with less fuss and faster turnaround.
How long does a made-to-measure suit take to make?
Once you’ve had your consultation and confirmed your order, your suit will be ready for its first fitting in around five weeks. At that stage, we’ll check the fit and make any finishing tweaks needed. We usually recommend allowing an extra two to three weeks for alterations, meaning your suit will typically be ready to collect or deliver within eight weeks, often sooner.
How much does a made-to-measure suit cost?
Prices vary depending on your choice of cloth, garment and personal touches – but we keep things simple and transparent. All our suit cloths are graded, so the price you pay is mostly determined by the fabric you fall in love with. While certain personalisations may carry a small additional cost, there are no hidden surprises. Two-piece suits start from around £1,000, and our bespoke shirts from £175.
Can I order a made-to-measure garment online?
While we can and do take orders online, and are happy to send you our detailed self-measurement guide and video, we always prefer working face-to-face. There’s no substitute for seeing a client in person: it allows us to take over twenty precise measurements, assess posture, shoulder slope and body shape, and guide you through the process properly from start to finish. You're not called Mr Tasker or Mr Shaw why is the business called what it is?
This is one of our most asked questions! The name Tasker & Shaw is a nod to two impeccably dressed gentlemen who left a lasting impression on our founder, James Hutchison. With a surname that’s often misspelled, James wanted a brand name that was both meaningful and easy to find online.
Mr Tasker was a schoolteacher whose signature look was a three-piece suit and a perfectly knotted tie, no matter the weather. Mr Shaw was James’ grandfather, an engineer by trade but always sharply dressed, never without a suit and a gleaming pair of shoes. Their influence helped shape James’ passion for timeless style, making Tasker & Shaw the natural choice for a name rooted in elegance, heritage and with a personal connection.
Where are your suits made?
We’re often asked where our suits are made, and unlike many made-to-measure brands, we’re proud to give you a clear answer.
Like the majority of the modern tailoring industry, we partner with a specialist production house in China, renowned for its craftsmanship and trusted by some of the world’s leading luxury and designer brands. Their workshop is fully WRAP-certified, meeting the highest global standards for both quality and ethics.
Every garment we produce is overseen by highly experienced British tailors with decades of Savile Row experience. Once your suit arrives in the UK, it’s carefully checked and, if once you've had your fitting any alterations or finishing touches are needed, they are carried out by a seasoned team of UK based professional alterations tailors.
This hybrid approach means you get the very best in global craftsmanship, fine cloths from the UK, Europe and Australia, expert tailoring, and exceptional quality control, combined with speed, consistency and a more accessible price point than traditional bespoke production allows.
I've never had anything tailor-made for me before, is it complicated?
Not at all, it’s surprisingly straightforward, and we’ll guide you through every step. In fact, one of the things our clients often say is how easy and enjoyable the experience is. Your consultation is relaxed and friendly, we’ll talk through what you’re looking for, help you choose the perfect cloth, style and personal touches, and take a full set of measurements (we take over twenty to get the fit just right). From there, we handle everything else.
The result? A beautifully made garment that fits you properly, reflects your personal style, and makes you feel fantastic.
How and when do I make payment for my order?
We keep things simple and transparent. When you place your order, we take a fifty percent deposit to get things underway. The remaining balance is due when your garment is ready and you come in for your final fitting or collection.
You can pay by bank transfer or credit/debit card, whichever suits you best. We’re also able to accept cash, though just let us know in advance so we can arrange that for you.
Do you only make menswear?
Not at all. While we’re rooted in the traditions of classic menswear, our expertise extends well beyond. We create garments for all genders — made-to-measure and beautifully tailored to the individual. Whether it’s a sharp three-piece suit, a perfectly cut jacket, or something more unusual, it’s not about menswear or womenswear. It’s about your wear.
