The right tailoring for the moments that call for more.
Formal occasions deserve more than something that is simply "smart enough". The cloth, cut and small details matter, but so does the confidence that comes from knowing everything fits exactly as it should.
At Tasker & Shaw, our made-to-measure formalwear is built around the occasion and around you.
Whether you need a dinner suit for black tie, morning dress for a wedding, or a formal look for the races, a gala or another important event, we'll guide you through the dress code, cloth, fit and finishing details without making the process feel complicated.
A good dinner suit should feel timeless rather than theatrical. Black remains the classic choice, while midnight blue offers a subtle alternative that works beautifully under evening light.
We'll help you choose the shape of the jacket, lapel style, cloth and finishing details, then build the garment around your proportions. The result is formalwear that looks sharp standing still, feels comfortable through a long evening and still looks right years from now.
We can also help you complete the look with the right shirt, footwear and accessories so that every element works together rather than competing for attention.
Morning Dress & Formal Daywear
Morning dress has its own rules, but that doesn't mean every wearer has to look identical. For weddings, race meetings and other traditional daytime occasions, we can help you create a look that respects the dress code while still feeling personal.
Fit is particularly important with formal daywear. A well-proportioned coat, correctly balanced trousers and a waistcoat that sits cleanly can transform the whole outfit. We'll guide you through colour, cloth and coordination so the finished look feels considered rather than costume-like.
Formalwear That Fits You and the Occasion
The benefit of made-to-measure formalwear is not simply that it fits better. It allows us to consider how the garment will actually be worn: the venue, season, time of day, dress code and how formal or individual you want the finished look to feel.
We take a comprehensive set of measurements and consider posture and proportion before discussing cloth and design. You can then make the choices that matter to you, with honest advice when you want it and none of the pressure that can make formalwear shopping feel intimidating.
"With James' guidance and honesty I was able to create a very individual suit. I have found my 'go to' tailor for everything sartorial."

When Should I Book?
Where possible, allow at least eight to twelve weeks before your event. That gives us time for your consultation, production, first fitting and any final adjustments without unnecessary pressure.
If your event is closer than that, contact us anyway. We will always tell you honestly what is achievable and do our best to help where production schedules allow.
Frequently Asked Questions.
Do you only make black dinner suits?
No. Black is the traditional choice, but midnight blue and other subtle options can work beautifully. We'll help you choose something appropriate for the dress code and the way you want to wear it.
Can you help if I don't understand the dress code?
Absolutely. Formal dress codes can be confusing. Bring us the invitation or tell us about the event and we'll explain what is expected, what is optional and where there is room for personal style.
Can you help with shirts, shoes and accessories too?
Yes. We can help you build the whole look, including made-to-measure shirts, handmade-to-order footwear and accessories.
How long does formalwear take?
Our usual made-to-measure process includes production, a first fitting and any final alterations. For an important event, we recommend allowing at least eight to twelve weeks wherever possible.
Arrange your consultation in Carlisle, Newcastle or London and we'll help you create formalwear that feels appropriate, comfortable and entirely your own.
